It has become one of the most basic security devices when it comes to Internet security. Firewalls are almost standard Internet security precautions that come with even the most basic types of virus and spyware protections. While these devices might be basic, few Internet users know exactly what they do or why they are important.

Firewalls are a security device that is installed onto a computer to prevent outside intrusions onto your computer. These intrusions can come in the form of viruses, spyware, malware and even hackers. These firewalls prevent anything from coming onto your computer without your knowledge. So in a way it sounds exactly what the name suggests. A firewall will stop like a fire any outside intrusions.

There are varying levels of firewalls. Some firewalls will only allow websites that are specifically programmed into it. This may sound extremely safe but it prevents any Internet users from visiting a number of websites that they might have. Other firewalls are designed to warn the Internet user if they feel a website or intrusion is happening and ask if it should stop it or allow it to go forward. This is probably a more practical type of firewall as it allows simple Internet browsing without the worry of gaining a virus or spyware.

The best thing that Internet firewalls can do it to keep any type of personal information safe. If a hacker were to gain access to a computer they would be able to get almost any type of personal information that they could use for identity theft of a number of other programs. By having a firewall installed it will prevent those hackers from gaining access and getting at your personal information.

Firewalls are so important to computer safety that they come pre-installed with almost every type of computer. While computer users can choose another type of firewall they can rest assure that they have some type of basic protection from hackers.
