Everyone has heard of them and in fact every computer probably has some type of firewall on it. However, very few people understand exactly what a firewall is and how it works.
A firewall is a protective shield or wall that prevents a number of attacks from happening on a computer or computer network. The term firewall actually stems from a physical item. Firewalls in houses and apartments are concrete walls that are build to prevent fires from spreading from one house or unit to another. In many ways a computer firewall does something very similar.

The way that a computer firewall works is fairly simple. The firewall is programed to examine and expect a number of different data streams that come in from the Internet. Within every firewall is a standard of security measures of known attacks. Since the firewall is programed to recognize these data streams from the millions of data streams it receives it will automatically block any type of access to the person’s computer and prevent the data from getting on the computer.
The level of security that a firewall provides will depend solely upon how it is set up. Firewalls can have a very loose type of security where it monitors for specific threats and attacks, or it can be extremely high security where it only lets specified data into a computer and blocks everything else from the computer.
